Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Top o' the mornin' to Ya!,
Okay, so since I'm not Irish (far from it, in fact) , and don't know much about this Irish holiday (besides the fact that, if you don't ware green, someone will pinch.Ouch! And that it's the #1 drinking holiday of the year) I got to wondering ,what it St. Patty's all about anyways . So, here is a very brief history of St. Patrick's day:

(courtesy of associatedcontent.com)
St Patrick is not Irish. He was born in Wales, a Roman territory at the time, in 385 AD and was raised in a wealthy family. His given name was Maewyn, though some say it was Succat, a Celtic word meaning victorious. His father was a Roman official so Maewyn was also known as Patricus. When he was 16 he was captured by a clan of Irish marauders and taken to Ireland as a slave. Once in Ireland, he was sent to County Antrim to be a shepherd. During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. After six years as a slave, Patrick escaped and made his way back to his family. He began studying in a monastery and there heard the voice of God' telling him to return to Ireland to convert the Pagans to Christianity. This he did as Bishop to Ireland in 432. His first church was in Saul in Northern Ireland.

Heres an intersting St. Patrick's Day fact: (courtsy of greenchicagoriver.com) For the past 43 years the Chicago River turns green for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade celebration. One would ask how this is different from the rest of the year when the river is always a murky shade of green. The difference is both significant and breathtaking because the color green -->
is identical to the greens of Ireland from where it got its name “The Emerald Isle.”

So, how are we supposed to celebrate this interesting holiday? (Besides drinking) I'm not exactly sure, but, you can go over to Renee's BLOG (Black n' Gold Girl's Book Spot) and help her celebrate her 1 yr. blogaversary! Great authors, awesome posts and fantastic giveaways. Be sure to stop by! It's sure to be a lot of fun!
Have a Happy St. Patrick's, Y'all! And, Go mbeannai Dia duit!(May God Bless You!)
